However, carbon dioxide is released as a byproduct during this process, leading to substantial emissions.
Modern technologies such as the electric arc furnace process have the potential to reduce emissions. In an electric arc furnace, scrap metal is melted down and heated using electric current, reducing the need for carbon as a reducing agent. This results in lower CO2 emissions compared to the blast furnace process. Nevertheless, emissions are still present as the energy mix used for electricity generation also plays a role.
The exact amount of emissions generated in the production of one kilogram of steel can vary depending on the region, production method, and energy source. On average, several hundred kilograms of CO2 per kilogram of steel are estimated to be emitted. However, it's important to emphasize that the steel industry is striving to develop more sustainable production processes to reduce environmental impacts. This can be achieved through the use of renewable energy sources, more efficient technologies, and the exploration of carbon capture technologies.
